Try Scuba Diving in Gozo

Breathing underwater for the first time is strange, and then it isn’t, and then you don’t want to come up. A Try Dive is the shortest way to find out whether diving is for you: a few hours, an instructor to yourself or with up to three others. No certification, no lengthy theory and no kit to buy.

What a Try Dive actually is

A Try Dive is a guided first experience of scuba, run by an instructor who stays with you the whole time. You don’t get certified and you don’t need to be. The point is to put scuba equipment on in shallow water, go for a swim underwater and see how you feel about it. SSI calls this Try Scuba; other agencies call it Discover Scuba Diving.

If you like it, the Try Dive can count toward your SSI Open Water Diver certification. If you don’t like it, you’ve spent €45 and an afternoon finding out, which is the cheapest way anyone has ever answered that question.

    1. 1

      Arrive at Bubbles

Meet your instructor, fill in some paperwork, get fitted for a wetsuit and kit. We handle the assembly. Grab a coffee while we set up.

    2. 2

      The briefing

Ten minutes on land covering how the equipment works, how to breathe, how to clear your mask, and the handful of hand signals you’ll need. No classroom, no exam.

    3. 3

      Into Bubbles Bay

Our training site is a short walk from the bar, sheltered and shallow. You’ll be in waist-deep water, breathe through the regulator, and practise two or three basics until they feel ordinary.

    4. 4

      The dive

When you’re ready, you go diving. Your instructor is beside you the entire time, controlling the depth and the pace. Most people are surprised how quickly it stops feeling like an exercise and starts feeling like swimming.

Bubbles Bay is home, but it's not always diveable. When conditions are better elsewhere, we load the truck and find the most sheltered site on the island. We've never cancelled a customer dive, we just adapt to the conditions.

The same standard, on every course.

Train in our own sheltered bay.

Bubbles Bay is right next to the centre, shallow, calm and ideal for learning. Less travel, less stress and more time practising the skills that actually make you confident.

    Max 4 divers per instructor

SSI permits more on most courses. We cap at four, the only centre on the islands that guarantees it.

    100% Safety Record

Oxygen, first aid and surface cover, every time.

    Every instructor here qualified here.

We don't hire in and hope.

You'll never wash a piece of kit.

The team handles it. You just dive.

Our base: bar and dive shop

Coffee before, lunch between, beer after.

    People come here to train.

We're the exclusive SSI Career Centre in Gozo and Malta.

    Requirements

You need to be comfortable in the water, not athletic.

    • Minimum age 10, under 15 certify as Junior Open Water Diver with a maximum depth of 12m. Once turned 15, it automatically upgrades to the full Open Water Diver.
    • A short swim and float assessment, no time limit, no speed requirement.
    • A medical questionnaire, if you answer yes to anything, you’ll need a doctor’s sign-off.
    • No prior experience needed, just excitement to explore the underwater world.
Nervous about your first breath underwater? Say so when you book. It’s the most common thing we hear, and a shallow bay with at most a group of four is the best place in Gozo to deal with it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be able to swim?

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable in water and able to move around comfortably. The Open Water course has a formal swim assessment; the Try Dive doesn’t.

    How deep will I go?

Shallow. Most Try Dives stay within a few metres, and your instructor controls the depth throughout. The maximum depth is 5m, you go as deep as you’re comfortable with and no deeper.

Does this count toward a certification?

It can. If you go and do your Open Water Diver course with us, the Try Dive credits toward it. Doing one first is a sensible way to commit to the full course knowing you’ll enjoy it.

    Can my kids do it?

Yes starting from age eight. Plenty of families do it together.

What if I get in the water and hate it?

You can get out whenever you want. out. No one is forcing you to stay, but we'll bring all the patience in the world and make this is an enjoyable for you as possible. And for 45€ it's the cheapest and easiest way to find out if diving is something you can enjoy.

    Ready to try diving?

Send us your dates and how many of you there are. Afternoons book up in summer, so a few days’ notice helps. If you’re not sure whether to do this or go straight for the full course, tell us and we’ll give you an honest answer.
